Barbie is launching its first autistic doll in an effort to represent how individuals with autism spectrum disorder experience the world around them, USA TODAY can exclusively reveal.
The new doll carries a pink fidget spinner that actually spins, wears pink noise-cancelling headphones to reduce sensory overload and holds a pink tablet that represents her augmentative and alternative communication,
The doll has a number of features that people with autism may be able to relate to, even down to eyes that don't make direct eye contact.
The doll features a gaze that is shifted slightly to the side, to "[reflect] how some members of the autistic community may avoid direct eye contact."
