A protest is taking place in Athlone today against the Mercosur trade deal, which was approved by the EU Council on Friday. The European Parliament is yet to vote on the trade deal with South America, which was opposed by Ireland, and a handful of other member states, over concerns about the quality of imported beef.
Everything you need to know: As many as 10,000 farmers are expected to take part in the protest in Athlone on Saturday. The event will begin in the morning and run through to early evening. A convoy of agricultural vehicles, a march and a rally with speakers will take place throughout the day.
Crowds are starting to build at TUS Athlone where a major rally will get underway this afternoon in opposition to the contentious EU-Mercosur trade agreement. The event is expected to draw thousands of attendees who will hear several speakers, including MEP Ciaran Mullooly and Deputy Michael Fitzmaurice address the issue.
