Six million pounds of fossilized shell now form the largest reef ever built by the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation. Designed to withstand hurricanes, it could soon host thousands of oysters per square meter—filtering Gulf waters and drawing back fish, crabs, and even manatees.
