In July 1994, 21 fragments from Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 collided with Jupiter, each capable of causing global catastrophe if they had struck Earth. Discovered in March 1993 by David Levy and Carolyn Shoemaker, astronomers predicted the collision a year in advance after tracking the comet’s fragmented path.
