On this day ten years ago, Severe Tropical Cyclone Yasi had made landfall close to Mission Beach just after midnight. The Category 5 system reached wind gusts of nearly 300km/h and was one of Queensland’s most powerful cyclones to date, almost making it as far as Mount Isa before being downgraded to a tropical low.
