James Meredith became the first black student to attend the University of Mississippi on October 1, 1962. It took a Supreme Court ruling and 30,000 troops to get him to class. Riots on campus left two people dead and more than 300 people injured in what some call “the last battle of the Civil War.” We spoke with his son, John Meredith, about integrating Ole Miss and what he considers to be an even greater accomplishment: his 1966 March Against Fear.
