Ever heard a snake actually hissssssssss? I’m sure you’ve all heard that snakes hiss but have you ever actually heard it for yourself? This rather large 2.5m Carpet Python I relocated from on top of Buderim yesterday certainly knew how to make some noise! What you are hearing is the air it’s expelling from its lungs while passing through it’s nostrils and mouth to sound scarier than it is in an attempt to get me to leave it alone. Some snake species hiss when they feel threatened. Snakes don’t have vocal cords. They are able to hiss by forcibly expelling air through the glottis, a structure in their throat. The glottis is a hole at the bottom of the snake’s mouth that connects to its windpipe. In mainstream films and even some documentaries, the hissing sound is added to snake footage while these reptiles tongue flick.
