Despite popular misconceptions, the Mississippi River is not the longest river in the United States. Instead, that title goes to the Missouri River, which is actually a tributary to the Mississippi. However, despite the fact that the Missouri is longer than the Mississippi at the time the rivers meet, the Mississippi keeps the name. If the lower Mississippi was named the Missouri instead, in line with typical naming conventions, then the Missouri River would be one of the longest rivers on Earth
