28 years ago today, the Roza Irrigation District hired two professional divers, John Eberle of Grandview and Marty Rhode of Zillah, to dive into a 104-foot-deep, half-mile-long siphon to retrieve abandoned and submerged cars. The two divers didn’t surface, and 911 was called. Our office responded with two professional volunteer divers from our Search and Rescue team. Charlie “J.R.” Mestaz, a volunteer firefighter from Moxee, and Rusty Hauber, a Yakima firefighter, answered the call for service.
