Ever noticed that mysterious structure poking out of the water at Avarua Wharf? 👀 That’s the Maitai Shipwreck, or as the locals call it, “The Boiler.” 🚢 Originally built in 1892, the RMS Maitai was a British Royal Mail cargo and passenger ship. During a voyage from San Francisco to Wellington, it ran aground just outside Avarua Harbour on Christmas Day, 1916. Over a century later, the wreck has become part of the reef and a fascinating piece of history now woven into Rarotonga’s coastline. 🌊
